Laerte Coutinho (born June 10, 1951), known simply as Laerte, is a famous Brazilian cartoonist and writer. She is well-known for creating popular comic strips like Piratas do Tietê (which means Pirates of the Tietê River).
In the 1980s, Laerte was part of a group of artists who made independent comics. She worked with other cartoonists like Angeli and Glauco. Together, they created a comic strip called Los Três Amigos.
Laerte has drawn for many magazines, including Balão and Chiclete com Banana. She also regularly draws for the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper. Since the mid-2000s, her comics have become more thoughtful and less focused on jokes. She is a transgender woman.

Early Life and Education
Laerte started her journey in art at a young age. In 1968, she finished a drawing course at the Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado. This helped her develop her artistic skills.
In 1969, she began studying journalism at the University of São Paulo. However, she decided not to finish the course. Her passion for drawing and storytelling led her down a different path.
Starting Her Career in Comics
Laerte created her first character, Leão, for Sibila magazine in 1970. During the 1970s, she worked for magazines like Banas and Placar. She also helped start Balão magazine with Luiz Gê.
In 1974, Laerte began working for newspapers. Her first newspaper job was with Gazeta Mercantil. This marked the start of her long career in daily comics.
Art for Social Causes
Laerte used her art to support important causes. In 1974, she created materials for the Brazilian Democratic Movement during elections. This group worked for democracy in Brazil.
The next year, she helped create cards to support political prisoners. In 1978, she drew comics about a character named João Ferrador for a metalworkers' union newspaper. She later co-founded Oboré, an agency that made communication materials for unions.
Her book Illustration Union (1986) had many illustrations and cartoons for unions to use.
Covering Major Events
Laerte also worked as a media artist for the FIFA World Cup. She covered the 1978 World Cup for O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper. She also covered the 1982 World Cup for Folha de S. Paulo. Later, she covered the 1986 World Cup for O Estado de S. Paulo.
Famous Comic Strips and Books
In the late 1980s, Laerte published comics in popular magazines. These included Chiclete com Banana and Geraldão. She also published in Circo magazine.
Her solo magazine, Piratas do Tietê, was launched by Circo publishing house. In 1985, she released her first book, O Tamanho da Coisa. This book was a collection of her cartoons.
In 1991, Folha de S. Paulo newspaper started publishing her Piratas do Tietê comic strips. Laerte regularly releases books that collect her comic strips.
Working as a Screenwriter
Besides comics, Laerte has also worked as a screenwriter. She helped write scripts for comedy TV shows like TV Pirata and Sai de Baixo. She also wrote for the children's show TV Colosso.
She hosts a talk show on Canal Brasil called Transando com Laerte.
Personal Life and Advocacy
Laerte is a strong supporter of transgender rights. In 2012, she helped start the Brazilian Association of Transgender People. This group works to support transgender individuals in Brazil.
In 2018, she created a short comic for Google Doodle to celebrate International Women's Day. The comic showed a man and a transgender woman falling in love.
Laerte's son, Rafael Coutinho, is also a cartoonist.
