Laerte Coutinho (born June 10, 1951), known simply as Laerte, is a famous Brazilian artist. She creates comic strips and writes stories for TV shows. Laerte is well-known for her comic series called Piratas do Tietê (which means Pirates of the Tietê River).
In the 1980s, Laerte was part of a group of artists who made unique comics in Brazil. She worked with other cartoonists like Angeli and Glauco. Together, they drew a comic strip called Los Três Amigos
.Laerte has drawn for many magazines, including Balão and Chiclete com Banana. She also regularly draws for the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper. Since the mid-2000s, her comics have become more thoughtful. They focus less on funny situations and more on ideas and feelings.

Laerte's Artistic Journey
Early Education and First Works
In 1968, Laerte finished a drawing course at the Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado. The next year, she started studying journalism at the University of São Paulo. However, she did not complete her journalism degree.
Laerte created her first character, Leão, for Sibila magazine in 1970. During the 1970s, while studying at USP, she worked for magazines like Banas and Placar. She also started a magazine called Balão with Luiz Gê. In 1974, she began drawing for newspapers, starting with Gazeta Mercantil.
Drawing for Social Causes
In 1974, Laerte started creating drawings for political campaigns. She supported the Brazilian Democratic Movement during elections. The next year, she helped make cards to support political prisoners.
In 1978, she drew stories about a character named João Ferrador. These stories were for the metalworkers' union in São Bernardo do Campo. Later, she helped create the Oboré agency. This company focused on making communication materials for unions.
Oboré published her book Illustration Union in 1986. This book contained many illustrations, comics, and cartoons. These were made for unions and other groups to use.
Sports and Comic Strips
Laerte also covered several FIFA World Cups as an artist. She drew for O Estado de S. Paulo during the 1978 and 1986 tournaments. She also drew for Folha de S. Paulo during the 1982 World Cup.
In the late 1980s, Laerte published comics in popular magazines. These included Chiclete com Banana and Geraldão. Her solo magazine, Piratas do Tietê, was also launched around this time.
In 1985, she released her first book, O Tamanho da Coisa. This book was a collection of her cartoons. In 1991, Folha de S. Paulo began publishing her Piratas do Tietê comic strips regularly. She often releases new books that collect her comic strips.
Writing for Television
Laerte has also worked as a screenwriter for television. She helped write scripts for comedy shows like TV Pirata and Sai de Baixo. She also wrote for the children's show TV Colosso.
Currently, Laerte hosts a talk show on Canal Brasil called Transando com Laerte.
Family Life
Laerte's son, Rafael Coutinho, is also a talented cartoonist.
