Lagoa DOC facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lagoa is a special area in Portugal, located in the sunny Algarve region. It's known for making delicious wine! Think of it like a special zone where grapes grow perfectly for making different kinds of wine.

Lagoa is so good at making wine that it has Portugal's highest official quality stamp, called Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC). This means the wines from Lagoa follow strict rules to make sure they are top quality.

This wine region is right next to other wine areas. To its west is the Portimão DOC, and to its east is the Tavira DOC. For a long time, Lagoa was famous for making "fortified wines." These are wines that have a little extra alcohol added, making them stronger and often sweeter, like Port wine. But lately, Lagoa has also been making more "table wines," which are the regular wines you might have with a meal.

Grapes Grown in Lagoa

The main types of grapes grown in the Lagoa region are:

  • Crato Branco (a white grape)
  • Negra Mole (a red grape)
  • Periquita (another red grape)

These grapes are carefully grown and harvested to create the unique flavors of Lagoa wines.
