Her Early Life
Laila Stien was born in a small village called Bjerka in Nordland, Norway. This was on May 16, 1946. She grew up in a place called Rana Municipality. Later, she lived in Finnmark, which is in the northern part of Norway.
Becoming a Writer
Laila Stien started her writing career in 1979. Her first book was a collection of short stories called Nyveien. These stories often shared ideas and culture from the Sami people, who are the native people of parts of Norway. Before her first book, some of her writings were included in other collections. These were Nordfra in 1975 and Nordnorge foreteller in 1977.
Her later collections of short stories, Fuglan veit (1984) and Sånt som skjer (1988), focused on families and everyday life. Many of her stories include details from Northern Norway and the Sami culture.
Laila Stien has won several important awards for her writing. In 1993, she received the Norwegian Critics Prize for Best children's book. She also won the Aschehoug Prize in 2000. In 2024, she was given the Dobloug Prize, which is a big award for writers in Sweden and Norway.
Translator and Editor
Besides writing her own books, Laila Stien has also translated books. She has translated books from the Sami languages into Norwegian. Some of the authors she translated include Synnøve Persen and Nils-Aslak Valkeapää. She has also helped put together collections of modern Sami literature. One of these was called Ildstedene synger from 1984.
Family Life
Laila Stien has a son named Ailo Gaup. He is a very famous athlete. Ailo Gaup is a former world champion in Freestyle Motocross, which is a sport where riders do amazing tricks on motorcycles.
