Lake Altoona is a special lake in Eau Claire County, Wisconsin, United States. It's not a natural lake. Instead, it was made by people. The lake is right next to the city of Altoona, Wisconsin. It is also east of Eau Claire.

How Lake Altoona Was Created

Lake Altoona was formed in 1938. People built a large structure called the Altoona Dam across the Eau Claire River. This dam held back the river's water. When water is held back like this, it creates a reservoir. A reservoir is like a big, man-made lake.

The Altoona Dam

The Altoona Dam is made of concrete. It has special gates called sluice gates. These gates can be opened or closed to control the water flow. The dam is located on the western side of the lake. It helps manage the water levels.

The dam is owned by Eau Claire County. Its main jobs are to help with fun activities like boating and fishing. It also helps save water for the area. The dam does not make electricity.

Lake Size and Fun Activities

Lake Altoona covers a large area. It is about 840 acres big. That's like more than 600 football fields!

Right next to the lake is Lake Altoona County Park. This park has many cool things to do. You can enjoy different outdoor activities there. It's a great spot for families and friends to visit.
