Lake Beseck, also known as Beseck Lake, is a body of water found in Middlefield, Connecticut. It stretches for almost one mile in length and is about a quarter-mile wide. This lake is actually a reservoir, which means it's a man-made lake created by building a dam across a river or stream.

About Lake Beseck

Lake Beseck is owned by the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection. This department helps protect and manage natural resources in Connecticut. The lake was created a long time ago, starting in 1846. It was formed when a dam was built to hold back water.

How the Lake Was Formed

The first dam for Lake Beseck was finished in 1848. It was ten feet shorter than the dam you see today. Over the years, the dam was made taller. In 1852, it was raised by five feet. Then, in 1870, it was raised by another five feet. This made the lake bigger and able to hold more water. The dam was completely rebuilt in 1938 to make it stronger and safer.

What is a Reservoir?

A reservoir is like a giant storage tank for water. People create reservoirs by building a large wall, called a dam, across a valley or a river. This dam stops the water from flowing freely and causes it to collect, forming a lake. Reservoirs are very important because they can store water for drinking, provide power, or help control floods. Lake Beseck serves as a valuable water body in its area.
