Lake Brienz

Lake Brienz (called Brienzersee in German) is a beautiful lake found just north of the amazing Alps mountains in Switzerland. It's located in the Canton of Bern. The lake has very steep sides, and there's hardly any shallow water anywhere around its edges.

The lake gets its name from the village of Brienz, which sits on its northern shore, towards the eastern end. Lake Brienz is known for its stunning turquoise water, which comes from the glacial meltwater flowing into it.

Discover Lake Brienz

Lake Brienz is one of the most beautiful lakes in Switzerland. It is about 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) long and 2.8 kilometers (1.7 miles) wide. The deepest part of the lake goes down to about 260 meters (850 feet)! That's super deep!

The lake is fed by several rivers, including the Aare River at its eastern end. The Aare River also flows out of the lake at its western end. This means the water in Lake Brienz is always fresh and clean.

Where is Lake Brienz?

Lake Brienz is in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. This area is famous for its tall mountains and clear lakes. The lake is nestled between high mountains, which makes the scenery incredibly dramatic and beautiful.

The town of Interlaken is located at the western end of the lake. Interlaken is a popular place for tourists because it's a great base for exploring both Lake Brienz and its twin lake, Lake Thun.

What Makes Lake Brienz Special?

The water in Lake Brienz is famous for its unique turquoise color. This color comes from tiny particles of rock flour carried by the glaciers and rivers that feed the lake. When sunlight hits these particles, it creates that amazing blue-green glow.

Because the water is so clear and cold, there aren't many fish in Lake Brienz compared to other lakes. However, it is home to some types of fish, like trout. The water quality is excellent, making it very clean.
