Discover Lake Brownwood

Lake Brownwood is a popular spot for outdoor activities in central Texas. It was built to help control floods and provide water for the area. Today, it's a great place for fishing, boating, and enjoying nature.

How the Lake Was Made

Before the lake existed, Brown County experienced a very bad flood in 1900. This event showed how important it was to control the water. Because of this, the people of Brown County decided to take action.

In 1926, they voted to create the Brown County Water Improvement District. This group was in charge of finding a way to manage the water. They bought the land needed and started building a dam in 1930.

The dam was finished in 1933. A big flood in July 1932 actually filled the area where the lake would be. However, the water had to be let out so workers could finish building the dam. The lake officially started holding water in July 1933.

After the lake was created, a town called Lake Brownwood, Texas grew up nearby. Also, the Texas Parks Board bought land in 1933 to create Lake Brownwood State Park. This park offers many fun things to do by the lake.
