Pecan Bayou is a gentle, slow-moving stream located in Callahan County, Texas. It's like a watery highway, fed by more than twenty smaller creeks. This makes it one of the most important tributaries (smaller rivers or streams that flow into a larger one) of the mighty Colorado River in Texas. Did you know it might even be the westernmost 'bayou' in the entire United States?

What is a Bayou?

A bayou (pronounced 'BY-oo') is a type of slow-moving stream or a marshy lake. They are often found in flat, low-lying areas, especially near coasts or large rivers. Bayous are known for their calm waters and rich wildlife. The word "bayou" comes from the Choctaw language, an Indigenous American language, and means "small stream."

Lake Brownwood: A Man-Made Lake

A special feature of Pecan Bayou is Lake Brownwood. This lake was created when a dam was built across the bayou. The dam is located about seven miles north of the city of Brownwood. Lake Brownwood is a popular spot for fishing, boating, and other water activities, making it a fun place for people to visit. It also helps manage water resources for the area.

Where Does Pecan Bayou Flow?

After leaving Lake Brownwood, Pecan Bayou continues its journey. It flows right through the cities of Brownwood and Early, Texas. From there, it travels into western Mills County. Finally, about eight miles west of Goldthwaite, Texas, Pecan Bayou joins the Colorado River. This meeting point is called a "confluence."
