Lake Charest (Mékinac) is a natural lake in Quebec, Canada. It is located in the area of Montauban-les-Mines. This area is part of the municipality of Notre-Dame-de-Montauban. The lake is in the Mékinac Regional County Municipality, which is in the eastern part of the Mauricie region.

Where is Lake Charest?

Lake Charest is found just east of the mining village of Montauban-les-Mines. It is also very close to the border of Saint-Ubalde.

The Charest River

This lake is where the Charest River begins. The river flows southwest for about 1.5 kilometers. It stays within the area of Notre-Dame-de-Montauban. Then it reaches the border of Saint-Ubalde.

In Saint-Ubalde, the river flows through different areas. It collects water from other small lakes, like Lake Sainte-Anne. It also picks up water from "Lake à la Perchaude," which means "Perch Lake." After this, the river turns southeast. It flows almost parallel to the larger Batiscan River.

What Does the Lake Look Like?

Lake Charest has a unique shape. It looks a bit like a pear wearing a hat! The "hat" part points north. The lake is about 0.56 kilometers long. Its widest point is about 0.27 kilometers across.

Several streets surround Lake Charest. These include "Des Écureuils" (Squirrels Street), "du camping" (Camping Street), and "Saint-Paul" Street.

Why is it Called Lake Charest?

The name "Lake Charest" was officially recognized on December 4, 1982. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec. This group is in charge of naming places in Quebec.

The Charest River is named after this lake, as it's the river's starting point. Before it was called Lake Charest, it had another name. On some old maps, it was called "Lake Narcisse."
