Lake Frances is a beautiful natural lake found deep inside Glacier National Park in the state of Montana, USA. It's a peaceful spot surrounded by amazing mountain scenery. This lake is fed by melting ice and snow from nearby glaciers, making its water very clear and cold.

Discover Lake Frances

Lake Frances is located in the northwestern part of Montana. It sits high up in the mountains, about 5,255 feet (1,602 meters) above sea level. Imagine being that high up! The lake is not huge, measuring about 0.60 miles (0.97 kilometers) long and 0.30 miles (0.48 kilometers) wide.

How Lake Frances Gets Its Water

The water in Lake Frances comes from two main sources. One is the runoff from the Dixon Glacier, which flows into the south side of the lake. Another important source is Thunderbird Glacier. Water from Thunderbird Glacier melts and forms Thunderbird Creek, which then flows into the east side of Lake Frances. Glaciers are like giant, slow-moving rivers of ice. As they melt, they provide fresh, cold water to lakes and streams.
