A Look Back: How the Park Began

The land for Lake Greenwood State Park was given in 1938. This was during a tough time called the Great Depression. Many people didn't have jobs back then. To help, President Franklin D. Roosevelt started a program called the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).

The CCC helped build many parks, including this one. Young men worked on projects like building roads and park buildings. They helped create 16 state parks in South Carolina. Many of the things they built at Lake Greenwood State Park are still used today. These include picnic shelters, a water fountain, a lakeside terrace, and a boathouse.
