Lake Langdon is a beautiful lake located in Mound, Minnesota. It covers an area of about 144 acres (0.58 square kilometers). The Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD) keeps track of its features. Even though its deepest point is about 38 feet (12 meters), it's considered a shallow lake. Its average depth is around 8.3 feet (2.5 meters).

The lake was named after R. V. Langdon, who was the first clerk of the township. You can find Lake Langdon west of Commerce Boulevard and south of Lynwood Boulevard. Boats on Lake Langdon cannot travel to the larger Lake Minnetonka nearby. However, water from Lake Langdon flows into Lost Lake through a stream called Langdon Bay Creek. Lost Lake is part of the "Big Lake" system. Lake Langdon also receives water from Saunders Lake, which is located to its west. The area of land that drains into Lake Langdon is about 6.5 times larger than the lake itself.

Understanding Lake Health

Lake Langdon sometimes has too much phosphorus. Phosphorus is a nutrient that can make plants grow too much, which isn't always good for a lake. This problem might have started because of an old sewer plant in Mound, which closed in the late 1970s.

The MCWD Report Card for Lake Langdon shows that phosphorus levels have dropped a lot over the past 20 years. However, it's still a concern. If more water flowed out of Lake Langdon, it could help reduce the phosphorus. Even though the lake was treated with a special chemical called Alum in 1998 to help clear the water, it still often looks cloudy.

Wildlife in Lake Langdon

Lake Langdon is home to many different animals, especially fish and birds.

Fish Species

You can find various types of fish in the lake. These include bass, crappies, and sunfish. There are also many carp and catfish living in the water.

Birds and Other Animals

During the warmer months, you might see beautiful birds like Blue Herons and White Egrets fishing along the shoreline. These birds are known for their long legs and ability to stand still while waiting for fish. On the western side of the bay, there are signs of beavers, such as trees that have been chewed down.
