Mound is a city in western Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. In 2010, about 9,052 people lived there. Mound is famous as the place where the Tonka truck was first made. The toy truck is named after Lake Minnetonka, which is partly in Mound. The city is about 22 miles (35 km) west of Minneapolis, the county seat.

History of Mound
Mound gets its name from ancient Indian mounds. These mounds were found within the city limits. They were built by prehistoric Native Americans, not the Dakota Indians.
The area known as Island Park used to be a separate town. It joined with Mound in 1960.
Mound celebrated its 100th birthday in 2012. This was a big event for the community.
Geography of Mound
Mound covers about 4.96 square miles (12.85 square kilometers). About 2.86 square miles (7.41 square kilometers) is land, and 2.10 square miles (5.44 square kilometers) is water. Main roads in the city include County Roads 15 and 110.
Many lakes are found in Mound. These include Black Lake, Dutch Lake, Lake Langdon, Saunders Lake, and Seton Lake. Lake Minnetonka connects to these and other lakes nearby. Mound has over 1,000 docks on its many lakes. The lakes help define different parts of the town. Some areas are called Three Points, The Island, The Highlands, Grandview Boulevard, and Shirley Hills.
Lake Langdon is just west of Mound. It sits between an old railroad line and Lake Minnetonka. A notable spot on Lake Langdon's east side was an old ice house and grocery store. In the 1940s and 50s, this store was run by Ed and Pete Sollie. They were uncles of the famous Andrews Sisters singing group. Other historic places on Lake Langdon's east shore include Our Lady of the Lake school and the Mound Baptist Church.

2010 Census Information
In 2010, Mound had 9,052 people living in 3,974 households. About 2,444 of these were families. The city had about 3,165 people per square mile (1,222 people per square kilometer). There were 4,379 homes.
Most residents (95.8%) were White. Other groups included African American (0.9%), Native American (0.3%), and Asian (1.3%). About 1.8% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.
About 27.8% of households had children under 18. Nearly half (48.1%) were married couples. About 30.7% of households were single individuals. About 7.9% of people living alone were 65 or older. The average household had 2.28 people, and the average family had 2.85 people.
The average age in Mound was 42.6 years. About 21.3% of residents were under 18. About 11.5% were 65 or older. The population was 51.5% male and 48.5% female.
Economy and Development
The Mound City Council has a plan called "Mound Visions." This project aims to bring more businesses to the city. Some of its successes include the Mound Marketplace. They also improved County Road 15 and built the Lost Lake Greenway. New townhouses called Villas on Lost Lake were also part of this plan.
Education in Mound
Mound is part of the Westonka School District. This district also includes Spring Park, Orono, St. Bonifacius, and Minnetrista. Schools in Mound are Grandview Middle School, Hilltop Primary School, Mound–Westonka High School, and Shirley Hills Elementary. The school mascot is the Whitehawk. It was changed from the Mohawk in 1997. Some students can attend schools in other districts. This is allowed under Minnesota's open enrollment law.
City Services
In 2021, the city's water system told residents that the water had higher levels of manganese. Mound was once a stop on the Great Northern Railway. This line was used by people traveling to and from work. It was closed in the 1980s.
Famous People from Mound
- Sheldon Beise – A great football player for the University of Minnesota in the 1930s.
- The Andrews Sisters – A famous singing group. They spent summers in Mound as children from 1918 to 1931. They visited their uncles' grocery store and enjoyed the Mound swimming beach.
- Kevin Sorbo – An actor who was born and grew up in Mound.
- Kris Humphries – A professional basketball player. He has a home in Mound on Lake Minnetonka.
- Henning Linden – A U.S. Army Brigadier General during World War II. He was born in Mound.
- Dennis Frederiksen - A former member of the band Toto.
- Christopher O'Malley – A business leader who was born and grew up in Mound.
- Taylor Matson – A professional ice hockey player.
