What is a Reservoir?

A reservoir is like a big, human-made lake. It's created when a dam is built across a river. The dam holds back the water, forming a large body of water behind it. Reservoirs are often used to store water for drinking, power generation, or even for fun activities like boating and fishing. Lake Mohawksin is one such reservoir.

Where Does the Name Come From?

Lake Mohawksin wasn't always called that. It was first known as Lake Tomahawk. However, this caused confusion with the town of Lake Tomahawk and a nearby lake called Tomahawk Lake.

To solve this, a contest was held in 1926. A person named Herbert Atcherson won the contest. He came up with the name "Mohawksin." This unique name is a mix of the last parts of the names of three rivers that flow into the lake. These rivers are the Somo, the Tomahawk, and the Wisconsin River.

Fun Facts About the Lake

Lake Mohawksin covers a large area of about 1,515 acres. That's like more than 1,100 football fields! The deepest part of the lake is about 25 feet deep.

If you love fishing, this lake is a great spot. You can find different types of fish here. Popular catches include northern pike, walleyed pike, and muskellunge. There are also six public places where you can launch your boat to enjoy the water.

The Tomahawk Dam, which created Lake Mohawksin, is owned by the Wisconsin Public Service Corporation. They manage the dam and the water levels of the lake.
