Lake Mweru facts for kids
Lake Mweru is a large freshwater lake in Africa. It sits right on the border between two countries: the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia. The lake is part of the mighty Congo River system.
The name 'Mweru' actually means 'lake' in many Bantu languages. So, people often just call it Mweru! About 110 kilometres (68 mi) of the border between these two countries runs right through the lake. For a long time, people have discussed exactly where the border should be in this area.
About Lake Mweru
Lake Mweru is quite long, stretching about 131 kilometres (81 mi). At its widest point, it measures around 56 kilometres (35 mi) across.
Rivers Connected to the Lake
Two important rivers are connected to Lake Mweru:
- The Luapula River flows into the lake. This means it's upstream, bringing water to Mweru.
- The Luvua River flows out of the lake. This river is downstream, carrying water away from Mweru.
