Where is Lake Nooney?
Lake Nooney is found in a special part of Glacier National Park. It sits to the east of a large mountain called Mount Custer. The lake is also about half a mile (0.8 kilometers) west of another lake, Lake Wurdeman.
Nearby Glaciers
High above Lake Nooney, to its northwest, is the Herbst Glacier. Glaciers are huge, slow-moving rivers of ice. They play a big role in how Lake Nooney looks.
Why is the Lake Turquoise?
The amazing turquoise color of Lake Nooney comes from something called rock flour. This is a very fine powder made from rocks.
How Rock Flour Forms
As glaciers like the Herbst Glacier move, they grind against the bedrock beneath them. This grinding action crushes the rocks into tiny, dust-like particles. These particles are as fine as flour.
Glacial Meltwater
When the glacier melts, this rock flour mixes with the water. The tiny rock particles stay floating in the lake water. They reflect sunlight in a unique way. This reflection makes the lake appear a bright, opaque turquoise color. It's like the lake is glowing!
