Lake Norden was first planned in 1908. It was named after a lake that is close to the town. The city officially became a city in 1916.

Lake Norden is home to the South Dakota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame. This is a special place that honors great baseball players from South Dakota.
A large factory called Agropur, Inc. is located in Lake Norden. This factory makes a lot of cheese and other food ingredients. It produces things like whey protein products. In 2019, the factory grew and can now make almost a million pounds of cheese every day! This factory provides many jobs for people in the area.
