Lake Plétipi is a large lake located in the middle of Quebec, Canada. It has a unique, uneven shape, not like a perfect circle or oval. This lake is an important part of the local water system. It gets its water from the Rivière aux Outardes and also drains back into the same river.

Discover Lake Plétipi

Lake Plétipi is quite far from busy areas. It's about 60 kilometers (about 37 miles) northwest of a huge natural landmark called Lake Manicouagan. Lake Manicouagan is actually a giant crater formed by an ancient meteor impact! Lake Plétipi is also about 80 kilometers (about 50 miles) from the nearest road, making it a truly wild and remote place.

Where is Lake Plétipi?

This lake is found in central Quebec. It spans across two different regions:

  • The Mont-Valin area in the Le Fjord-du-Saguenay Regional County Municipality.
  • The Rivière-Mouchalagane area in the Caniapiscau Regional County Municipality.

It covers a large area of about 339 square kilometers (about 131 square miles). That's bigger than many cities!

Why is Lake Plétipi Special?

Lake Plétipi, along with two nearby lakes called Matonipi and Matonipis, is very important for nature. The area around these lakes has been suggested to become a special "biodiversity reserve." A biodiversity reserve is a protected area where many different kinds of plants and animals live. The goal is to keep these natural habitats safe and healthy for the future. This proposal is part of Canada's Natural Heritage Conservation Act, which helps protect important natural places.

Who Lived Near Lake Plétipi?

Long ago, the area around Lake Plétipi was a hunting ground for the Betsiamites people. The Betsiamites are a group of Naskapi peoples, who are Indigenous peoples of Canada. They traditionally lived off the land, hunting and gathering food. This shows that the lake and its surroundings have been important to people for a very long time.
