A Look Back at Lake View's History

Early Settlers and the Lake View Hotel

Some of the first people to settle in Lake View were Ebenezer Ames, Jacob F. Schoellkopf, and Ebenezer Walden. Jacob Schoellkopf was a very successful businessman in western New York. Ebenezer Walden was a famous lawyer and mayor from Buffalo. His family built the Lake View Hotel in 1880. This hotel served many traveling salespeople, often called "drummers." They arrived on trains to sell their goods in the nearby areas. These salespeople would rent a horse and buggy from the stable behind the hotel to visit their customers.

Railroads and Growth

By 1890, two more railroads, the New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad and the Pennsylvania Railroad, ran through Lake View. These railroads brought a lot of business and money to the small community. An electric trolley, called the Buffalo & Erie, was also built. It made it easier to travel to and from Buffalo. This trolley operated until the mid-1930s.

Community Life and Local Efforts

In 1882, a summer resort community called the Idlewood Association was started in Lake View. Business people from Buffalo, including James N. Adam and John D. Larkin, had summer homes there.

Other important places and groups were also started. These included the Lake View School in 1890, the Day Bicycle Factory in 1895, and the Lake View Fire Association in 1923.

During World War II, two young women, Winifred Stadler and Rita Fierle, created a newsletter called the Lake View Local. They sent it to the men and women from Lake View who were serving in the military overseas. In the late 1950s, the Lake View Community Association put together a cookbook. It was called "The ABC's of Cooking" and had many favorite recipes from local residents.

Lake View, New York, is also known as the home of the Moose Jaw Rockies. This team has won six world championships in the Preston Ridlehuber Football League (P.R.F.L.). Their home field is located on the cliffs overlooking Eighteen Mile Creek.

Places of Worship

The Lake View Community Church was started in 1889.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church was established in 1921. On September 1, 2001, it joined with the St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church. The combined church was named Blessed John Paul II Parish. When John Paul II became a saint on April 27, 2014, the parish changed its name to St. John Paul II R.C. Church.
