A Look Back: Park History

The area around Lake White State Park has an interesting past. Part of the park includes old parts of the Ohio and Erie Canal. This canal was like a water highway built a long time ago. It helped boats carry goods across Ohio.

Building the Lake

Lake White itself was built during a tough time in American history. This period was called the Great Depression. It was a time when many people did not have jobs. The lake was built by a group called the Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.). The W.P.A. was a government program. It gave people jobs building important projects like roads and parks. This helped many families during the Great Depression.

Most of the land around Lake White is owned by private citizens. Lake White officially became a state park in 1949. This happened when Ohio created its Division of Parks and Recreation.

Fixing the Dam

In 2014, the dam at Lake White started to leak. A dam is a big wall that holds back water to form a lake. Because of the leak, the lake had to be drained. This allowed workers to begin major repairs. In 2015, the Ohio Department of Transportation announced plans to fix the dam. They also repaired the bridge that crosses over it. This work helped make the park safe and ready for visitors again.
