Lake of the Woods is a special community in Locust Grove, Orange County, Virginia, United States. It is known as a census-designated place, which means it's a specific area counted by the government. However, it is not an officially incorporated city or town.
This community is also a gated subdivision. This means it has controlled entrances for safety and privacy. It covers about 2,600 acres of land. There are 4,260 home lots within the community. About 850 of these lots have direct access to the lake. The community has more than 41 miles of private paved roads. Since 2020, Lake of the Woods has been included in the larger Washington–Baltimore combined statistical area.
About Lake of the Woods
Lake of the Woods has grown into a "bedroom community." This means many people who live here travel to nearby cities for work. A popular city for commuters is Fredericksburg. The population of Lake of the Woods was 7,177 people in 2010.
The Lakes
Lake of the Woods was first created as a resort community. It was built around a man-made lake. Today, the community has two lakes. These are the Main Lake and Keaton's Lake.
The Main Lake is quite large, covering 500 acres. It gets its water from Flat Run and many natural springs. The Veterans Memorial Dam was built in 1968. It stretches 1,450 feet along the northwest side of the Main Lake. The Main Lake's depth varies. It is about two feet deep where Flat Run flows in. It can be as deep as 45 feet near the dam. This lake has two marinas, seven places to access the water, and eight sandy beaches.
Keaton's Lake is smaller, covering 35 acres. It is about 7 feet deep. This lake is located at the northeast corner of the community. It is close to Route 3. Its dam is 450 feet long.
Community Life
Lake of the Woods has its own Volunteer Fire and Rescue company. This group helps keep the community safe.
History of the Community
Lake of the Woods was started in 1967. It was created by Virginia Wildlife Clubs. This group was part of a company called U.S. Land, Inc. Later, Boise Cascade Corporation bought the land. They developed it into homes for single families. In 1972, the Lake of the Woods Association, Inc. took over. They now own and manage the common areas of the community.
Lake of the Woods is located in the northern part of Orange County. It is just outside of Spotsylvania County and Fredericksburg. Many people who live here travel to the Washington Metropolitan Area for work. This high number of commuters led to Lake of the Woods being included in the Washington, DC-Baltimore, MD-Arlington, VA Combined Statistical Area in 2020. Other parts of Orange County are more rural. This means the county as a whole is not yet part of the Washington Metropolitan Area.
