History of Lakeview Square

In October 1969, a company called Lakeview Development Ltd. announced plans for a huge building project. They wanted to invest C$20 million to create a large complex in downtown Winnipeg.

This big complex includes several important parts:

  • Delta Hotel

* This is an 18-story hotel with 410 rooms. * It has both indoor and outdoor swimming pools. * When it opened in January 1974, it was the largest hotel in Winnipeg. * The hotel has many spaces for big meetings and events. * It also has a pub called the Elephant & Castle. * It used to have a dance club, but that area is now used for conferences.

  • Holiday Towers

* These are two tall apartment buildings, each 27 stories high. * Together, they have about 500 apartments. * People living here can use their own rooftop pool and running track. * They can also use the pools and exercise areas at the Delta Hotel.

  • One Lakeview Square

* This is a 19-story office building located at 155 Carlton Street. * On the first floor, there is a restaurant.

  • 175-185 Carlton Street

* These are connected buildings with offices and shops on the first floor. * A tobacco shop has been there since the complex opened. * In the basement of 185 Carlton, there is a Japanese steak house called Ichi Ban Restaurant. * This restaurant has been part of the complex since 1974. * It was designed by Nat Hart, who used to work at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas.

  • Japanese Hayashi Garden

* This is a special private park that faces Carlton Street. * It can also be reached from Hargrave Street and York Avenue. * The garden helps celebrate Winnipeg's sister-city relationship with Setagaya, Japan. * It was created to be a peaceful center for the complex. * It also replaced a city park that was moved when Lakeview Square was built.

The Delta Hotel is located where St. Mary's School used to be. That school closed in 1968 and burned down in 1969.

All the buildings in Lakeview Square are connected by walkways. They also share a large underground parking garage.

Lakeview Square is linked to the Winnipeg Convention Centre by two skyways. One skyway connects to the Delta Hotel, and the other connects to One Lakeview Square.

In 2010, Lakeview Square became even more connected to the main Winnipeg Walkway system. A new skyway was built from 330 St. Mary Avenue to the Delta Hotel. This skyway runs along the outside of the Delta Hotel on the St. Mary Avenue side. It connects to the older skyway that goes to the Convention Centre.
