Lakeview Square Mall is a shopping mall located in Battle Creek, Michigan. It first opened its doors in 1983. A shopping mall is a large building with many different stores inside. This mall used to have big "anchor" stores like Sears and J. C. Penney. Anchor stores are usually large department stores that attract many shoppers. Now, it doesn't have any of these big stores. Some of the stores you can find there include Barnes & Noble and Dunham's Sports. The mall is managed by GK Development.
The Mall's Beginning
Sidney Forbes and Maurice Cohen were the first people to plan Lakeview Square Mall. They announced their ideas in 1980. They wanted to build the mall on Beckley Road in Battle Creek.
The mall officially opened on May 15, 1983. When it first opened, it had three main anchor stores. These were JCPenney, Sears, and Hudson's. Hudson's later changed its name to Marshall Field's in 2001. Then, it became Macy's in 2006.
One of the first new additions to the mall was a movie theater. This theater opened in 1995. It was built near the Sears store.
Changes Over the Years
In 1998, a company called General Growth Properties bought Lakeview Square Mall. They also bought two other malls in Michigan at the same time.
That same year, a popular clothing store called Old Navy opened at the mall. It took the place of a department store called Gilmore Brothers. Gilmore Brothers had closed five years earlier.
In 2006, Dunham's Sports opened a store in the mall. They moved from a shopping area nearby. Another store, Steve & Barry's, opened in 2007. It replaced the Old Navy store. However, Steve & Barry's closed in 2008 because the company went out of business. That space is now home to Shoe Department Encore.
The mall changed owners again in 2011. It was sold to Cushman & Wakefield. Then, in 2013, it was sold to GK Development. GK Development still manages the mall today.
Anchor Stores Close
In recent years, the big anchor stores at Lakeview Square Mall have closed.
- On January 4, 2017, it was announced that Macy's would close. This was part of a plan to close many Macy's stores across the country. The store closed in March 2017.
- Soon after, on March 17, 2017, JCPenney announced its closure. It closed on July 31, 2017.
- After these two big stores left, other smaller stores also moved out. For example, FYE closed in July 2018.
- Finally, on November 8, 2018, it was announced that Sears would also close. It closed in February 2019.
With Sears gone, Lakeview Square Mall no longer has any anchor stores.
