Lakota Woman is a true story written by Mary Brave Bird. She was a Sicangu Lakota woman, which is a group of the Lakota people. Mary grew up on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. In her book, she shares stories from her childhood and young adult life. She also writes about important historical events she was part of, especially those connected to the American Indian Movement.

The book tells about Mary Brave Bird's experiences in two major events. One was the 1972 Trail of Broken Treaties. This was a protest march across the United States. The other was the 1973 Indian Occupation at Wounded Knee. This was a stand-off where Native Americans protested for their rights. Mary also writes about her marriage to Leonard Crow Dog. He was a spiritual leader for the American Indian Movement. She also shares details about her involvement in the Native American Church, a spiritual path for many Native Americans.
