Lamar Hunt Jr. was born on October 20, 1956. He is an American businessman. He owns and leads the Kansas City Mavericks, a professional ice hockey team. His father was Lamar Hunt, and his grandfather was the famous oil businessman H. L. Hunt. Lamar Hunt Jr. is also part of the family that started and runs the Kansas City Chiefs NFL team.

Early Life and Education

Lamar Hunt Jr. was born to Lamar and Rose Mary Whittle Hunt. He grew up in Dallas, Texas. He spent his childhood living with both his father and his mother.

He went to a private school called St. Mark's School of Texas. After high school, he studied at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (UCCCM). Later, in 2003, he earned a Master of Arts degree in Counseling from Dallas Baptist University.

Music Career

While in high school, Lamar Hunt Jr. learned to play the flute. His teacher was David Vornholt, a flutist from the Dallas Symphony.

After finishing his studies at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in 1979, Hunt went to Duquesne University. There, he earned a master's degree in music. He then joined the Kansas City Symphony as the second flutist. In 1990, he also recorded an album of Bach's flute sonatas.

Professional Career

Lamar Hunt Jr. runs four different organizations. They are all part of a group called Loretto. One is a non-profit, and three are businesses.

  • The Loretto Foundation helps with Catholic education.
  • Loretto Commercial works on building projects in Kansas City.
  • Loretto Sports Ventures focuses on sports teams. It is closely connected to the Kansas City Mavericks hockey team.
  • Loretto Properties builds homes and businesses.

In 2015, a company connected to Hunt's Loretto Sports Ventures bought the Missouri Mavericks ice hockey team. This team later became the Kansas City Mavericks in 2017.

In 2018, another company linked to Loretto Sports Ventures bought the Topeka RoadRunners. This was a junior hockey team. Hunt changed the team's name to the Topeka Pilots. The team played in Topeka for two seasons. In 2020, the team moved to Kansas City and was renamed the Kansas City Scouts. However, they did not play during the 2020-21 hockey season because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, Hunt sold the team. It was then moved to Amarillo, Texas, and became the Amarillo Wranglers.

Besides owning the Mavericks, Hunt is part of the family that started and runs the Kansas City Chiefs NFL team.

Personal Life

Lamar Hunt Jr. grew up in Dallas, Texas. In 2003, he married Rita Mae Hammerschmidt. She had two children from a previous marriage. Lamar Hunt Jr. has nine grandchildren. He lives in Kansas City.
