How Lamartine Got Its Name

The town of Lamartine was named after a famous French person. His name was Alphonse de Lamartine. He was a well-known French poet and historian. He became very popular during the French Revolution of 1848.

Changing the Town's Name

Before it was called Lamartine, the town was known as Seven Mile Creek. Peter V. Sang was an important person in the Seven Mile Creek community. He was the postmaster and town clerk. Peter Sang helped gather signatures to change the town's name. He wanted to honor Alphonse de Lamartine.

The United States government had recognized Lamartine's work on April 26, 1848. Because of this, Peter Sang wanted to rename the town after him. On June 13, 1848, a proposal was made to the First Wisconsin Legislature. This proposal was to change the name from Seven Mile Creek to Lamartine. The bill was approved and signed into law by Governor Nelson Dewey on August 8, 1848.
