Lamberto Bava's Early Life and Career
Lamberto Bava was born in Rome, Italy, on April 3, 1944. His father, Mario Bava, was a famous director. Mario was especially known for making scary horror films. Lamberto started his film career in the mid-1960s. He worked as an assistant director on his father's movie Planet of the Vampires.
Lamberto helped his father on many other projects. These included films like Danger: Diabolik (1966) and Twitch of the Death Nerve (1971). He also helped with Shock (1977). For Shock, Lamberto even helped write the story. Besides working with his father, Lamberto also helped director Ruggero Deodato make movies. In 1978, Lamberto and Mario directed an episode for an Italian TV series. It was called I giochi del diavolo. Their episode was based on a story by Prosper Mérimée.
Directing His First Movies
Lamberto met director Pupi Avati. This meeting led to Lamberto directing his first movie, Macabre, in 1980. He wrote the movie with Pupi and Antonio Avati. Lamberto said that after his father saw Macabre, he told him, "Now I can die in peace." Sadly, Mario passed away later that same year.
After Macabre, Lamberto worked in advertising for a while. He also kept writing ideas for new movies. Later, director Dario Argento asked Lamberto to help him. Lamberto became an assistant director for Argento's mystery film Tenebre (1982). In 1983, Lamberto directed his second movie, a mystery film called A Blade in the Dark. This movie was first planned as a TV film. It was made with a very small budget.
Lamberto's next two movies were different from his usual mystery and horror films. He directed Blastfighter. This film was originally meant to be a new version of the Australian movie Mad Max. Lamberto's next film was called Monster Shark.
Working on Demons and TV Series
In 1985, Lamberto Bava worked with Dario Argento again. They made the movie Demons. Argento helped write and produce this film. The movie is about a special showing of a horror film at a theater. During the movie, a young woman gets scratched by a mask in the lobby. She turns into a scary creature. Then, she attacks other people in the audience, spreading the infection.
A sequel, Demons 2, came out in 1986. Many of the same actors and crew worked on it. In Demons 2, a TV show causes a zombie outbreak in an apartment building. Lamberto also made a TV movie called Midnight Killer that same year. He even had a small part in the movie as a photographer. While working on Midnight Killer, Lamberto started getting ready for his next film, Delirium (1987).
Lamberto went back to directing for television. He made several episodes for a series produced by Dario Argento. These episodes included "Heavy Metal" and "Giubetto Rosso." In 1986, a company announced new TV films. These films, called Brivido giallo, would be directed by Bava. Four films were made for this series. One was Graveyard Disturbance, shown at a film festival in 1987. Another was Until Death. The other films were The Ogre and Dinner with a Vampire.
Later Works and Fantaghirò
After the Brivido giallo series, Lamberto made more TV films. These were for a series called Alta tensione. They were filmed between 1988 and 1989. However, they were not released until 1999. One TV film from this time was not released until 2007. Lamberto also made a new version of the movie Black Sunday. It was for a European TV series and was called La maschera del demonio. This film came out in 1990.
In the 1990s, Lamberto Bava started directing the Fantaghirò series. This was a fairy tale series for television. It was inspired by movies like Legend and Willow. This series was made for families, which was different from his earlier horror work. The Fantaghirò series finished in 1997. It had eight long episodes.
Before finishing Fantaghirò, Lamberto worked on other TV projects. These included Desideria (1994-1995) and another fantasy series called Sorellina e il Principe del Sogno (1996). In the late 1990s, Bava made another TV film called Caraibi. Some of Lamberto's more recent film work includes L'Impero and Ghost Son.
