Giuseppe Avati, known as Pupi Avati (born November 3, 1938), is a famous Italian film director, producer, and screenwriter. He has created many different types of films, from exciting horror movies to heartwarming dramas and comedies.

Pupi Avati's Early Life and Career
Pupi Avati was born in Bologna, Italy, in 1938. After finishing school, he studied political science at the University of Florence. His first job was at a frozen food company.
A Love for Music
While working, Pupi Avati also loved jazz music. He became very good at playing the clarinet. In the late 1950s, he started a band called the Doctor Dixie Jazz Band. A well-known musician named Lucio Dalla was also in this band.
Even though he loved music, Avati felt he wasn't talented enough to be a professional musician.
Discovering Film
In the mid-1960s, Pupi Avati decided to try making movies. He was inspired after seeing a film called 8½ by Federico Fellini. This movie showed him what a film director does.
Avati's love for music and his hometown of Bologna became important themes in his films. Many of his movies are set in Bologna.
His first films were Balsamus. L'uomo di Satana (1968) and Thomas e gli indemoniati (1969).
A Versatile Filmmaker
Pupi Avati has directed almost forty films and TV shows. He often writes or helps write the scripts for his own movies. He has also written screenplays for other directors.
He has produced many films, both his own and those by other directors. His brother, Antonio Avati, often produces movies with him.
Avati started his career directing horror films. He is known as one of Italy's best horror directors. Two of his most famous horror films are The House with Laughing Windows (1976) and Zeder (1983).
A TV series called Jazz Band (1978) was a big moment for Avati. This series was about his old jazz band. After this, his films became more personal and looked back at his own experiences. The series was very popular and helped more people discover his work.
Throughout his career, Avati has made many different kinds of films. These include horrors, historical movies, dramas, jazz comedies, and films about real people's lives. This shows he is a very flexible director.
Awards and Recognition
Pupi Avati has won many important awards for his work as a director, screenwriter, and producer. He has been nominated for the Palme d'Or (Golden Palm), Nastro d'Argento (Silver Ribbons), and David di Donatello Awards.
He has won two David di Donatello Awards and five Silver Ribbons. In 1995, he was given a special honor called Commendatore Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana.
From 1995, he led the Federico Fellini Foundation. This foundation remembers the great director Federico Fellini.
In 2008, Avati wrote his autobiography, Sotto le stelle di un film. A documentary about him, Pupi Avati, ieri oggi domani (Pupi Avati, yesterday today tomorrow), was made in 2010.
He has also written several novels, including Il ragazzo in soffitta (2015) and Il signor diavolo (2018). He even made a film based on Il signor diavolo.
Personal Life
Pupi Avati is married to Amelia "Nicola" Turri. They have two sons and one daughter. He is a Catholic.
