Some of his most famous works include the horror films The House with Laughing Windows (1976) and Zeder (1983).

Pupi Avati's Early Life and Career

Pupi Avati was born in Bologna, Italy, in 1938. After finishing school, he studied political science at the University of Florence. He then started working at a frozen food company.

From Music to Movies

At the same time, Pupi Avati loved jazz music. He became a very good clarinet player. In the late 1950s, he started a band called the Doctor Dixie Jazz Band. A famous musician named Lucio Dalla was also in this band.

Even though he wanted to be a professional musician, Avati felt he wasn't talented enough. In the mid-1960s, he decided to try making movies. He was inspired by the film by Federico Fellini, which showed the important role of a director.

Avati's love for music and his hometown of Bologna often appear in his films. Many of his movies are set in Bologna.

First Films and Growing Success

His first films were Balsamus. L'uomo di Satana (1968) and Thomas… gli indemoniati (1969). Pupi Avati has directed almost forty films and TV shows. He also writes or helps write most of his movies. A TV series called Jazz Band (1978) was a big moment for Avati. It was about his old band, the Doctor Dixie Jazz Band. After this, his movies started to be more about his own life and memories. They became more thoughtful and personal. The series was very popular and helped more people discover his work.

In 2008, Avati wrote a book about his life called Sotto le stelle di un film. A documentary film about him, Pupi Avati, ieri oggi domani ("Pupi Avati, yesterday today tomorrow"), was made in 2010.
