Lambridge Mill, sometimes called Lambrigg Mill, is a special type of windmill known as a wind pump. It's located in a place called Sea Palling, inside the beautiful Norfolk Broads National Park in the United Kingdom. You can find it about 2 miles southwest of a village called Waxham. This old wind pump is so important that it's protected as a grade II listed building.

What is Lambridge Mill?

Lambridge Mill is a wind pump, which means it uses wind power to pump water. Its main job was to help drain water from the nearby marshy lands. It worked alongside another, older mill called Brograve Mill. Both mills helped to keep the land dry, making it useful for farming.

A Look Back: Its History

The Lambridge Mill you see today was built around 1865. It worked hard for many years, helping to drain the Long Gore Marsh and the Brograve Levels. These areas were very wet, and the mill's job was to move water into the Waxham New Cut, a special drainage channel. The mill stopped working around 1937, almost 100 years ago!

What's in a Name?

The name of the mill can be a bit confusing! Some maps, like the Ordnance Survey Explorer map, call it "Lambrigg Mill." However, the name "Lambridge" seems to fit better because there's a Lambridge Mill Farm and a Lambridge Mill Cottage nearby. So, it's known by both names.

Seeing the Mill Today

Today, Lambridge Mill is no longer working and is in a ruined state. You can still see parts of it standing. Only two of its original four "stocks" remain. These are the long wooden beams that held the sails. They are still perched on top of the brick tower. Sadly, only a small, rotten piece of the mill's original cap (the top part that turned to face the wind) is left.

It's tricky to get right up close to the mill because it's on private land, within the garden of Lambridge Mill Cottage. There aren't any public paths that lead directly to it. However, you can get a good view of it from the Waxham New Cut. If you have a small boat that doesn't use a motor, you can travel along the cut to get a closer look.
