Lamont J. Robinson Jr. (born February 21, 1982) is an American politician and businessman. He is currently an alderman for the 4th ward in the Chicago City Council. An alderman is like a city council member who helps make decisions for a specific part of the city. He won this job in 2023. The 4th ward covers parts of Chicago's Douglas, Kenwood, and Near South Side neighborhoods.

Before becoming an alderman, he was a state representative for the 5th district in the Illinois House of Representatives from 2019 to 2023. A state representative works in the state government to create laws for the whole state. His district included parts of Chicago like the Near North Side and Chicago Loop.

Lamont Robinson is the first openly LGBTQ African-American person to serve in the Illinois legislature.

Early Life and Education

Lamont Robinson owns two Allstate insurance agencies. He also teaches as an adjunct professor at different City Colleges of Chicago campuses. An adjunct professor is a teacher who works part-time at a college.

In 2019, Robinson completed a special program at Harvard Kennedy School. This program helps leaders in state and local government learn new skills.

Serving Illinois: State Representative (2019-2023)

From 2019 to 2023, Lamont Robinson served as a state representative for Illinois. In this role, he helped make laws for the state. He was part of several important committees. Committees are groups of lawmakers who focus on specific topics.

He was the chairman of the Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, & IT Committee. This committee looked at how to keep computer information safe. He also led the Tourism Committee, which worked to bring more visitors to Illinois.

Serving Chicago: City Alderman (2023–Present)

In 2023, Lamont Robinson was elected to the Chicago City Council. He became the alderman for Chicago's 4th ward. This means he represents the people living in that part of the city. He works to solve local problems and make decisions that affect his community.

He won his election after the previous alderman, Sophia King, decided not to run again. Lamont Robinson won in a special second election, called a runoff election, against another candidate named Prentice Butler.
