The Lander Downtown Historic District is a special part of Lander, Wyoming. It is the main business area of the town. This district helps us remember what Lander looked like a long time ago.
It includes 16 important buildings that show the history of the area. These buildings include shops, the Noble Hotel, the Grand Theatre, and the Stockgrower's Bar. The Federal Building, which used to be a post office and courthouse, is also part of this historic area.
What Makes This District Special?
Most of the buildings in the Lander Downtown Historic District were built between 1890 and 1910. Before this time, many older buildings were made of wood. They often burned down or were replaced. The buildings you see today are mostly made of stronger materials like brick.
Around 1910, an oil boom started in central Wyoming. This meant that people had more money. They wanted to build bigger and better buildings. This helped create the strong, lasting structures we see in the district today.
Where is the Historic District?
The district covers most of the north side of Main Street. It stretches between Second Street and Fourth Street. There are also a few buildings on the south side of Main Street. One building faces Lincoln Street at Third Street.
Why is it a "Historic District"?
A historic district is an area that has been officially recognized for its important history. The buildings in these districts are often very old and show how people lived and worked in the past. They are protected so that future generations can learn from them.
The Lander Downtown Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 5, 1987. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to our country's history. Being on this list helps protect the buildings and makes sure their history is remembered.
