Lane is a small community in Atoka County, Oklahoma, United States. It is called an unincorporated community and a census-designated place. This means it's a recognized area, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
In 2020, about 300 people lived in Lane. It is located along State Highway 3, about 10 miles (16 km) southeast of the town of Atoka.
How Lane Got Its Name
The post office in Lane first opened on October 6, 1902. It was named "Lane" because the building where the new post office was located was at the end of a path. This path was like a "lane" that had fences on both sides.
At the time it was founded, Lane was part of Atoka County, Choctaw Nation. This was a special government area for the Choctaw Nation before Oklahoma became a state.
Geography and Water
Lane is surrounded by interesting natural features. To the northeast of Lane, you'll find McGee Creek Reservoir. A reservoir is a large artificial lake used to store water. This one holds the water from McGee Creek.
McGee Creek is a smaller stream that flows into a larger one. It is a "tributary" of Muddy Boggy Creek. Muddy Boggy Creek flows to the east of Lane.
Famous Residents
Lane is known for being the home of a very famous rodeo champion, Lane Frost. He was a professional bull rider who became a world champion. Lane Frost lived in Lane, and his parents still live there. He graduated from high school in the nearby town of Atoka.
