Lane Weston Adams, born on November 13, 1989, is a former American professional baseball player. He was an outfielder who played in Major League Baseball (MLB). He played for teams like the Kansas City Royals and the Atlanta Braves.
Early Life and Amazing Basketball Skills
Lane Adams grew up in Red Oak, Oklahoma. He is part of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, a Native American tribe.
When he was in high school at Red Oak, Lane was a fantastic basketball player. He scored an amazing 3,251 points! This made him the fifth-highest scorer in Oklahoma high school basketball history. In his junior year, he was also the best in Oklahoma at making free throws. He was so good that he even got a scholarship to play basketball at Missouri State University.
Baseball Career Highlights
Kansas City Royals
The Kansas City Royals picked Lane in the 13th round of the 2009 MLB Draft. He decided to sign with the Royals instead of going to college. He received a $225,000 signing bonus.
In 2012, Lane was named a Mid-Season All-Star in the Midwest League. The next year, he played for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. He was named a Royals’ Minor League Player of the Year in 2013. After that season, the Royals added him to their main roster.
In 2014, playing for the Naturals, he had a good batting average of .269. He also stole 38 bases, which was the third-highest in the league! On September 1, 2014, the Royals called him up to the major leagues. He made his MLB debut that same night.
In 2015, he continued to play well for the Naturals, batting .298. He also stole 29 bases. The Royals released him in November 2015.
New York Yankees
After leaving the Royals, the New York Yankees picked up Lane. In 2016, he played for the Trenton Thunder. He stole 31 bases in 36 tries. The Yankees released him in July 2016. At 26 years old, he even thought about stopping baseball.
Chicago Cubs (First Time)
On August 3, 2016, Lane signed a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs. He played for the Tennessee Smokies. He batted .325 and stole 9 bases without being caught! After the season, he became a free agent.
Atlanta Braves (First Time)
Lane signed with the Atlanta Braves on December 13, 2016. Their manager, Brian Snitker, didn't even know who he was at first! In 2017, playing for the Gwinnett Stripers, he batted .264 and stole 15 bases.
The Braves called him up to the Major Leagues on April 25, 2017. A few days later, he got his first major league hit. On June 22, he hit his first major league home run. It was a three-run shot! On September 10, Lane hit a special 2-run, walk-off home run in the 11th inning. For the 2017 season with the Braves, he batted .275 and successfully stole all 10 of his bases.
On April 19, 2018, the Braves removed him from their main roster. He chose to become a free agent instead of going back to the minor leagues.
Chicago Cubs (Second Time)
On May 5, 2018, Lane signed another minor league deal with the Chicago Cubs. He played well for the Tennessee Smokies, batting .325. He was released by the Cubs in June.
Atlanta Braves (Second Time)
On July 16, 2018, Lane signed a minor league deal with the Atlanta Braves again. He was called back up to the major leagues on September 1. In 2018, he batted .240 with one stolen base for the Braves. He became a free agent again in November.
By the end of 2018, Lane had a major league batting average of .263. He also stole 11 bases without ever being caught! In his minor league career, he stole 235 bases.
Philadelphia Phillies
On January 14, 2019, Lane signed a minor league contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. He played for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. He hit 12 home runs and stole 8 bases. He was released on July 1, 2019.
Atlanta Braves (Third Time)
On July 31, 2019, Lane signed a third minor league deal with the Atlanta Braves. He played 18 games for the Mississippi Braves. He became a free agent after the season.
Minnesota Twins
On February 17, 2020, Lane signed a minor league deal with the Minnesota Twins. He did not play in 2020 because the minor league season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He became a free agent in November.
Mexican League Teams
In 2021, Lane played for two teams in the Mexican League. First, he signed with the Acereros de Monclova on May 20, 2021. He batted .263 in 26 games before being released.
Then, on June 24, 2021, he signed with the Tigres de Quintana Roo. He played 9 games for them.
Lane Adams retired from playing professional baseball after the 2021 season. He now works as a private hitting instructor, helping other players improve their skills.
