Langenstein's is a special grocery store chain in Greater New Orleans, Louisiana. It is owned by a local family. This store chain started way back in 1922. That makes it the oldest full-service grocery store in New Orleans!
Besides regular groceries, Langenstein's also sells yummy prepared foods. They focus on local favorites from the New Orleans area. Some of these tasty dishes include daube glacé, crawfish pie, crawfish etouffee, seafood gumbo, and grillades.
The Story of Langenstein's
Langenstein's was started in New Orleans in 1922. A man named Michael Langenstein and his two sons, George and Richard, opened the first store. It was located at 1300 Arabella Street in a part of the city called Uptown New Orleans.
In 1954, the store moved to a bigger building. It was just down the street at 1330 Arabella Street. This gave them more space for all their groceries.
Growing the Business
Langenstein's began to open more stores in 1994. These new stores were in the areas around New Orleans. The first new store opened at 800 Metairie Road in Metairie, Louisiana.
Later, in 2015, they opened another location. This one was at 122 Sauve Road in River Ridge, Louisiana. The original store on Arabella Street was then used for a new business. It became Prytania Wine & Spirits.
Family Ownership Continues
As of 2025, Langenstein's is still a family business. It is managed by the great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren of the founder, Michael Langenstein. His granddaughter married into the Lanaux family. Her husband and their children continued to manage the grocery chain.
In April 2022, Langenstein's celebrated a huge milestone. They had a public party for their 100th birthday! The celebration was at their Arabella Street location. It even featured live music by Delfeayo Marsalis & the Uptown Jazz Orchestra.
