The Lanky Goodenia, also known as Goodenia elongata, is a special flowering plant. It belongs to the Goodeniaceae family. This plant is found only in south-eastern Australia. It grows upright or slightly leaning. It has long, narrow leaves on its stems. Its pretty yellow flowers grow alone or in clusters.

What Does Lanky Goodenia Look Like?

The Lanky Goodenia is a plant that grows upright or leans a bit. It can reach about 40 centimeters (16 inches) tall. Its leaves are mostly smooth, meaning they don't have many hairs.

Leaves and Flowers

The leaves are shaped like a spear, wider at the base and narrower at the tip. They are usually 5 to 9 centimeters (2-3.5 inches) long. They can be 4 to 20 millimeters (0.15-0.8 inches) wide. Sometimes, the edges of the leaves have small teeth. These leaves grow directly on the plant's stems.

The yellow flowers grow either by themselves or in groups called racemes. A raceme is a cluster of flowers on a single stem. These flower clusters can be up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) long. Small, leaf-like parts called bracts grow near the flowers.

Flower Parts and Fruit

Each flower has small, spear-shaped parts called sepals, which are about 3.5 to 4 millimeters long. The main part of the flower, called the corolla, is yellow and measures 12 to 20 millimeters long. The lower parts of the corolla are 4 to 6.5 millimeters long. They have special "wings" that are about 1.5 to 2 millimeters wide.

Lanky Goodenia plants usually flower from October to February. After flowering, they produce a fruit. This fruit is an oval-shaped capsule, about 8 to 9 millimeters long.

How Lanky Goodenia Got Its Name

The scientific name for this plant, Goodenia elongata, was first officially written down in 1805. This was done by a scientist named Jacques Labillardière. He described the plant in his book, Novae Hollandiae Plantarum Specimen.

Where Does Lanky Goodenia Grow?

This type of goodenia plant likes to grow in forests. It especially prefers wet areas. You can find it in New South Wales, south of a town called Holbrook. It also grows in the eastern part of Victoria and in many low-lying areas of Tasmania. There are also a few records of it in eastern Victoria. A single record shows it in the far south-east of South Australia.
