The Acacia ataxiphylla, also known as the Large-fruited Tammin wattle, is a type of shrub. It belongs to the Acacia plant family. This special plant grows naturally in Western Australia.

What Does the Large-fruited Tammin Wattle Look Like?

This shrub usually grows to be about 0.15 to 0.6 metres (0.49 to 2.0 ft) tall. It has unique leaf-like parts called phyllodes. These phyllodes are long and thin, like narrow lines. They can be straight or slightly curved.

The phyllodes are typically 15 to 60 millimetres (0.6 to 2.4 in) long and 1 to 2 mm (0.04 to 0.08 in) wide. Their tips are often slightly hooked.

Flowers and Pods

The Large-fruited Tammin wattle produces beautiful white or cream-colored flowers. You can see these flowers from June all the way to January.

Flower Details

The flowers grow in small, round or slightly oval clusters. Each cluster has about 15 to 20 tiny flowers. These clusters grow on stalks that are 4 to 12 mm (0.16 to 0.47 in) long. Each flower has five parts, and their sepals and petals are joined together.

Pods and Seeds

After the flowers, the plant forms reddish-brown seed pods. These pods are narrow and oblong, meaning they are longer than they are wide. They can be curved and grow up to 20 mm (0.79 in) long and 4 mm (0.16 in) wide.

Where Does It Grow?

This wattle shrub can grow in many different types of soil. It thrives in sand, gravel, clay, or loam. You can find it in scattered groups across the Wheatbelt and Great Southern areas of Western Australia.

It often grows on top of laterite, which is a type of soil rich in iron and aluminum. You'll see it in low heathlands, shrub mallee, and open woodlands with Eucalyptus trees.

Types of Large-fruited Tammin Wattle

Scientists have identified two different types, or varieties, of the Acacia ataxiphylla:

  • Acacia ataxiphylla var. ataxiphylla
  • Acacia ataxiphylla var. muricata
