Discovering the Story of Laura Timmins
The story takes place in Oxfordshire, England, many years ago. It follows a teenage girl named Laura Timmins. Laura lives in a small village called Lark Rise. Her parents send her to work in the nearby town of Candleford. She becomes an assistant at the post office there.
Laura's New Life in Candleford
The post office is run by Miss Dorcas Lane. She is a cousin of Laura's mother. At first, Laura's father, Robert Timmins, misses her a lot. But soon, he becomes very proud of her. Laura does really well in her new job. Laura's friend, Alf Arless, has a crush on her. However, as Laura gets used to town life, he realizes she doesn't feel the same way.
Meet the Post Office Team

- Thomas Brown is the postman. He is a very religious man. He tries to stay out of any trouble or silly fun.
- Zillah is the maid. She has worked for Miss Lane for many years. She thinks she is in charge of the whole house.
- Mrs Macey is the senior assistant. She decides to leave when others find out about her husband's past.
New Characters and Seasons
A second series of Lark Rise to Candleford started in January 2009. This season brought in some exciting new characters.
- Minnie is a new maid who joins the team.
- James Dowland is a rich hotel owner. He becomes very interested in Dorcas Lane.
The show ran for four successful seasons. The BBC decided not to make a fifth season. They felt it was the right time to create new dramas. They hoped viewers would enjoy the new shows just as much. The very last episode aired in early 2011.
