Larry Audlaluk CC (born 1953) is an Inuk activist and writer from Canada. He is known for being one of the people who were forcibly moved during the High Arctic relocation program. In 2007, he was given a special honor and became a Member of the Order of Canada.

His book, What I Remember, What I Know: The Life of a High Arctic Exile, was a finalist for a major award, the Governor General's Award for English-language non-fiction, in 2021.

Larry Audlaluk's Early Life

Larry Audlaluk was born in Inukjuak, Quebec, in 1953. When he was young, his family was one of many Inuk families who were forcibly moved by the Canadian government. This event is known as the High Arctic relocation.

His family was moved to Grise Fiord, Nunavut, which is very far north in Canada. Life was very hard for them, and they faced many challenges. Larry had an eye injury as a child and was in pain for almost four years. Eventually, the government flew him to Montreal for medical help. By 2008, Larry Audlaluk had become the person who had lived in Grise Fiord the longest.

Activism and Community Work

As an adult, Larry Audlaluk became an important leader in his community. He shared his experiences with the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples in 1993. This commission was set up to study the lives of Indigenous peoples in Canada.

Larry Audlaluk also tried to become a politician. He ran in the 2004 Nunavut general election for the Quttiktuq area, but he was not elected.

His Book: What I Remember, What I Know

Larry Audlaluk's memoir, What I Remember, What I Know, was published in 2020. A memoir is a book where someone tells their own life story.

His book was recognized for its importance. Besides being a finalist for the Governor General's Awards, it was also shortlisted for the 2021 J. W. Dafoe Book Prize.

Special Honors

In 2007, Larry Audlaluk was given a very high honor in Canada. He was made a Member of the Order of Canada. This award recognized his many years of service and dedication to his community in Grise Fiord.
