About Larry Marshall's Early Life and Education
Larry Marshall was born in 1943 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He grew up in both South Carolina and New York. When he was a child, he started a singing group called the Dell Chords. They sang a style of music called doo-wop. Later, he went to college at Fordham University and Xavier University. He also studied music at the New England Conservatory of Music.
Larry Marshall's Acting and Singing Career
While studying at the New England Conservatory, Larry got a part in the musical play Porgy and Bess. He traveled around the world performing in this show. After finishing college, he continued to act in Porgy and Bess. He performed it across the United States and on Broadway, which is a famous theater district in New York City. For his role as Sportin' Life in Porgy and Bess, he was nominated for important awards like the Tony Award and the Drama Desk Award. He played this role for many years, even into the 1990s.
Larry Marshall also appeared in other Broadway shows. These include Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Full Monty, and The Color Purple. He also performed in the New York Shakespeare Festival.
Larry Marshall has acted in movies too. He played the famous musician Cab Calloway in the movie The Cotton Club. Cab Calloway himself praised Larry's acting in that movie. Larry also played Simon Zealotes in the movie Jesus Christ Superstar. In 2015, Larry reunited with other actors from Jesus Christ Superstar for a documentary called Superstars.
