Larry Murray, born on April 1, 1953, is a former professional baseball player. He was an Outfielder in Major League Baseball (MLB). He played for six seasons in the big leagues. He spent time with the New York Yankees and the Oakland Athletics.
Playing for the New York Yankees
Larry Murray was a talented baseball player. The New York Yankees picked him in the 3rd round of the 1971 Major League Baseball Draft. This happened right after he finished high school. He first played in the major leagues in 1974. He also played a few games for the Yankees in 1975 and 1976.
Joining the Oakland Athletics
Murray got a big chance in 1977. The Oakland Athletics traded some players with the Yankees. The A's sent Mike Torrez to the Yankees. In return, they received Dock Ellis, Marty Perez, and Larry Murray. This trade gave Murray a chance to play more often.
Murray's Time with the A's
Larry Murray played in 90 games for the Oakland A's in 1977. He had 179 at bats. His batting average was .179. He also had 9 runs batted in (RBI). He was fast and managed to steal 12 bases.
In 1978, Murray spent most of his time in the minor leagues. He got another chance with the A's in 1979. However, he didn't play much better. His batting average was .186. Even his speed seemed to slow down. He stole only 6 bases out of 12 tries. Soon, Tony Armas took his spot in the lineup. This was the end of Murray's major league career.
After leaving the major leagues, Murray played one more season. He played for the Ogden A's in 1980. Then, he retired from professional baseball.
