Lars-Emil Johansen, born on September 24, 1946, is an important politician from Greenland. He served as the second Prime Minister of Greenland from 1991 to 1997. He also held the position of Speaker of the Inatsisartut (Greenland's Parliament) from 2013 to 2018.
Johansen was the leader of the political party Siumut (which means "Forward") between 1987 and 1997. He was a member of the Landsting (Greenland's Parliament) right from its beginning in 1979. Before the Landsting was created, he represented Greenland in the Parliament of Denmark starting in 1973. He held this position again from 2001 to 2011. He also served as President of the West Nordic Council from 2015 to 2016.
Early Life and Education
Lars-Emil Johansen was born in Illorsuit, a small village near Uummannaq in Greenland. His father was Kristian Johansen, a commercial agent. His mother, Elisabeth Johansen, was a district midwife and made history as the first woman to be a member of the country council from 1959 to 1975.
In 1970, Johansen completed his education and became a teacher. The following year, he was elected to the Greenland country council. This council was the most powerful local authority in Greenland before the Landsting was formed.
Awards and Recognition
Lars-Emil Johansen has received several important awards for his service. He was appointed a Commander of the Danish Order of the Dannebrog. He also received the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit.
In Greenland, he was honored with two types of the Nersornaat. This is Greenland's Medal for Meritorious Service. He received both the silver Nersornaat and the golden Nersornaat, which is the highest honor.
