The Inatsisartut is also known as the Parliament of Greenland. It is the main law-making body for Greenland. Greenland is a special territory that governs itself, but it is still part of the Danish realm.

The word "Inatsisartut" means "those who make the law" in the Greenlandic language. This parliament started in 1979. It meets in a building called Inatsisartut, located in Nuuk, the capital city.

There are 31 people who are members of the Inatsisartut. They are chosen in elections every four years. The way they are chosen is called proportional representation. This means that parties get seats in the parliament based on the percentage of votes they receive.

What is the Parliament of Greenland?

The Parliament of Greenland is like the main decision-making group for the country. It is a "unicameral" parliament. This means it has only one group of members, not two different groups.

This parliament makes all the important laws for Greenland. It helps run the country and makes sure things work well for everyone.

How the Parliament Started

The Parliament of Greenland took over from an older group called the Greenland Provincial Council. This change happened on May 1, 1979. Since then, the Inatsisartut has been the main place where laws are made in Greenland.

The parliament is led by a group called the presidency. This group includes four members of the parliament and a chairman.

Who is the Speaker?

The Speaker is a very important person in the Inatsisartut. They are in charge of leading the meetings. The Speaker decides which members can talk and makes sure everyone follows the rules. They help keep order during debates.

After an election, the prime minister suggests who should be the Speaker. Then, the other members of the parliament vote to confirm this person. The Speaker also chooses four other members to help them. These helpers are called deputies.
