Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A presidium or praesidium is a group of leaders or officials in some political meetings or organizations. This group works together to manage the business of the organization. They might work alongside a main leader, like a president, or they might lead the group themselves. Think of it like a small team that helps run a big club or a government meeting.

Presidiums in Communist Countries

In Communist countries, a presidium is often a special committee that is always working for the main law-making body. This body is like a parliament. For example, in the USSR, which was a large country that existed before 1991, the Supreme Soviet was the main law-making group. It had a Presidium.

The Presidium of the Supreme Soviet

The Presidium of the Supreme Soviet was a very important group in the USSR. It was created in 1936. From 1938 to 1989, the person leading this Presidium was the official head of state for the USSR. This means they were the top representative of the country. Later, other titles like "Chairman of the Supreme Soviet" and "President of the Soviet Union" were used.

The different parts of the Soviet Union, called Republics, also had their own Presidiums. The leaders of these local Presidiums were the actual leaders in those republics.

Presidiums Today in Communist Countries

Today, the term presidium is still used in some countries. For example, in North Korea, there is the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly. This is the main law-making body there.

In China, the Presidium of the National People's Congress helps lead the country's main law-making assembly. The Workers' Party of Korea in North Korea also has a Presidium of the Politburo of the Workers' Party of Korea. This is a small group of five or fewer top leaders who guide the party.
