Early Life and Background
Kim Kielsen was born on November 30, 1966. Before he became a politician, he worked as a police officer. He served in this role from 1996 until 2003.
Political Journey
Starting in Parliament
Kim Kielsen began his political career in 2005. He won a seat in the Inatsisartut, which is Greenland's parliament, during the 2005 Greenlandic general election. While serving in parliament, he led several important committees. These included committees focused on construction, natural resources like minerals, and protecting the environment.
Becoming a Minister
From 2006 to 2007, and again from 2010 to 2013, Kielsen led Greenland's group at the Nordic Council. This council works to improve cooperation between Nordic countries. In 2013, he became a government minister. He was in charge of the environment, nature, and Nordic cooperation.
Leading Greenland as Prime Minister
In October 2014, the previous leader of the Siumut party, Aleqa Hammond, stepped down. This happened after some issues arose regarding the use of public money. Kim Kielsen then ran for the leadership of the Siumut party. On October 18, 2014, he won the election with 44 out of 65 votes. He became the acting Prime Minister of Greenland.
On December 4, 2014, Kielsen officially became the Prime Minister. This happened after his Siumut party formed a government with two other parties: Atassut and the Democrats.
Challenges and Changes
In September 2018, Kielsen's government lost its majority. This occurred when the Naleraq party left the government. They disagreed with a plan for Denmark to help pay for upgrades to two airports. On September 29, Kielsen formed a new government. This new government was a minority government, meaning it had fewer than half the seats in parliament. It included Siumut, Atassut, the Democrats, and Nunatta Qitornai.
In October 2020, some members of parliament tried to remove him from his position. This is called a motion of no confidence. However, the attempt failed with 14 votes against it and 13 votes in favor. In November 2020, Kielsen lost his position as the leader of the Siumut party to Erik Jensen. He served as the Speaker of the Inatsisartut from April 2022 to September 2023, and again since 2025.
Personal Life
Kim Kielsen is married to Judithe Kielsen. They have two children together. He is able to speak both the Danish and Greenlandic languages.
Views on Greenland's Future
In August 2019, there was news that U.S. President Donald Trump was interested in buying Greenland. Kim Kielsen responded by saying that "Greenland is not Danish. Greenland is Greenlandic." He also stated that this topic should be taken seriously and not as a joke. This showed his strong belief in Greenland's identity and independence.
