Aleqa Hammond (born on September 23, 1965) is a politician from Greenland. She used to be a member of the Danish Parliament, called the Folketing. She was also the leader of the Siumut party. Aleqa Hammond made history by becoming Greenland's first female prime minister after her party won the most seats in the 2013 elections. She later stepped down from her roles as prime minister and party leader in 2014 due to issues with public funds. She left the Siumut party in 2016 and became an independent politician. In 2018, she joined a new party called Nunatta Qitornai.
Her Early Life
Aleqa Hammond was born in Narsaq, Greenland, and grew up in Uummannaq. When she was seven years old, her father, Piitaaraq Johansen, passed away during a hunting trip.
She attended Nunavut Arctic College in Iqaluit from 1989 to 1991. After that, she studied at the University of Greenland from 1991 to 1993, though she did not complete her studies there.
In 1993, she started working for Greenland Tourism as a Regional Co-ordinator in Disko Bay. She later worked as an Information Officer for the government and then for Nuuk Tourism from 1996 to 1999. From 1999 to 2003, she was a commissioner for the Inuit Circumpolar Council and helped with the 2002 Arctic Winter Games. She also worked in the tourism industry in Qaqortoq from 2004 to 2005.
Her Political Journey
Aleqa Hammond was first elected to the Parliament of Greenland in November 2005. She became the Minister for Families and Justice. In 2007, she took on the role of Minister of Finance and Foreign Affairs. She resigned from this position in 2008 because she was concerned about the government's budget.
After her party, Siumut, lost the 2009 elections, she became the new leader of the party. In the 2013 elections, she received a record number of votes from the public.
As prime minister, Aleqa Hammond hoped that Greenland would become an independent country. She spoke about building a strong nation and taking responsibility for their country. On October 1, 2014, she took a break from her role because of an investigation into her expenses. Kim Kielsen then became the acting prime minister and later took over as the leader of the Siumut party permanently.
In 2015, Aleqa Hammond was elected to the Danish Folketing (Parliament) in the general elections. She received the most personal votes in Greenland. In August 2016, she was no longer part of the Siumut party after issues with her Folketing credit card for personal expenses. She then became an independent politician. In 2017, she became the chairman of the Greenland Committee. In March 2018, she announced that she would run for the Greenlandic parliament with the Nunatta Qitornai party.
