Exploring Las Terrazas: A Special Community
About 1,000 people live in the village of Las Terrazas. It's a popular spot for tourists, with hotels and restaurants. This community is a great example of how people can rebuild and protect nature.
Why is it Called Las Terrazas?
The name Las Terrazas means "the terraces" in Spanish. This name comes from the way the land was shaped. Long ago, many trees were cut down in the surrounding hills. This caused the soil to wash away easily, which is called erosion.
To fix this, people planted new forests on the hills. They built special steps, or terraces, into the land. These terraces helped to stop the soil from washing away. Now, the reserve has 5,000 hectares (about 12,355 acres) of these replanted forests.
Nature's Wonders: Plants and Animals
The Las Terrazas reserve is full of amazing flora (plants) and fauna (animals). You can find beautiful lakes, clear rivers, and stunning waterfalls here. It's a perfect place to see different kinds of Cuban wildlife.
Fun Things to Do and See
If you visit Las Terrazas, there are many exciting things to do. You can explore the reserve on its many footpaths and trails. Guided tours can be booked at the local tourist office. It's a fantastic way to learn about the environment and enjoy the outdoors.
