The Sierra del Rosario is a beautiful mountain range found in western Cuba. It stretches across parts of the Pinar del Río and Artemisa areas. This mountain range is part of a larger system called the Guaniguanico range, and it sits right next to the Sierra de los Órganos.

Where is Sierra del Rosario Located?
This mountain range is in the northwest of Pinar del Río province and the east of Artemisa province. It is located near several towns, including La Palma, Los Palacios, Consolación del Sur, Bahía Honda, Candelaria, and San Cristóbal.
A Special Protected Area
The Sierra del Rosario was named a Biosphere Reserve on February 15, 1984. This was a very important step, as it was the first place in Cuba to get this special protection! A Biosphere Reserve is a place recognized by UNESCO where people try to balance nature conservation with human activities. It helps protect unique plants and animals while also allowing people to live and work there in a sustainable way.
The reserve covers a large area of about 266.86 km2 (103.04 sq mi). It is home to amazing tropical forests. These forests include trees that stay green all year round (evergreen) and others that lose their leaves during certain seasons (semi-deciduous).
Plants and Animals of Sierra del Rosario
The forests of Sierra del Rosario are full of life! They are home to many different kinds of plants and animals.
Amazing Plants
More than 800 different types of plants grow in the moist forests of these mountains. About 35% of these plants are endemic. This means they are found only in this specific area and nowhere else in the world! It makes them very special and important to protect.
Unique Wildlife
The Sierra del Rosario is also a home for many interesting animals:
- Bats: You can find five different kinds of bats flying around.
- Birds: There are many birds, but one of the most famous is the Bee hummingbird. It is the smallest bird in the world!
- Frogs: Several types of frogs live here, including the yellow-striped pygmy eleuth (Eleutherodactylus limbatus) and Zeus' robber frog (Eleutherodactylus zeus).
- Lizards: Various lizards also make their home in the reserve, such as the Anolis luteogulartis.
