Las Toscas is a lovely resort town located on the "Gold Coast" (Costa de Oro) in southern Uruguay. It's part of the Canelones Department, a region known for its beautiful beaches. Many people visit Las Toscas to enjoy the sand and sea.
Where is Las Toscas?
Las Toscas is found along a main road called the Ruta Interbalnearia. This road connects many beach towns. Las Toscas is right in the middle, between Atlántida on its west side and Parque del Plata on its east side. It's about 47 kilometers (29 miles) from the start of the Ruta Interbalnearia.
The Story of Las Toscas
Las Toscas is now connected to nearby towns like Atlántida and Parque del Plata. But a long time ago, in the early 1900s, the name "Las Toscas" was used for the whole area. Even Atlántida's train station was called Las Toscas! Before the big Ruta Interbalnearia road was built, the train station and another road, Ruta 11, were the only ways to get to this coastal area.
This area is special because it's where people started planting many trees along the coast of the Río de la Plata. This was a big job done by different private groups. The person who made this tree-planting project a huge success was Mario Ferreira. Today, the main street in Las Toscas is named after him.
The very first pieces of land in Las Toscas were sold between 1911 and 1914. The first building in the resort was built much later, in 1946.
