Latrobe is a small place in El Dorado County, California. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it's not officially a city or town with its own local government.
Today, Latrobe has about 219 people, based on the 2010 census. But a long time ago, it was a busy railroad town. Back then, between 700 and 800 people lived there!
Latrobe was the end point, or terminus, for the Placerville and Sacramento Rail Road. The name "Latrobe" was given by F. A. Bishop. He was the chief engineer of the railroad. He named it after Benjamin Henry Latrobe, II, who was a very important engineer. Benjamin Latrobe, II, worked for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, which was America's very first railroad! Latrobe even had its own post office from 1864 to 1921.
