Laufey facts for kids
This page is about the figure in Norse mythology. For comic book villain, see Laufey (character).
Laufey is a common Icelandic female name
Laufey or Nál is an important figure in Norse mythology. She is known as the mother of Loki, a famous trickster god.
Loki is often called Loki Laufeyjarson in old Norse poems. This means 'Loki, son of Laufey'. This is interesting because in Norse myths, children are usually named after their fathers. This is called a patronymic (like 'son of Fárbauti'). But Loki is often called by a matronymic, which means he is named after his mother, Laufey. This makes Laufey a special and well-known mother in these ancient stories.
